Ileal Interposition

What Is Ileal Interposition Surgery?

Ileal interposition is a bariatric surgery procedure that is performed to enable more effective use of the small intestines and also provides weight loss.  Anatomical changes are made in the upper small intestines during surgery. In short, the surgical procedure consists of replacing the last part of the small intestine with the beginning part. Ileal interposition, known as diabetes surgery, aims to reduce the blood sugar resistance hormone of patients.

Ileal interposition is the definitive solution for Type 2 diabetes patients. The Ghrelin hormone is eliminated, and the absorption of nutrients going to the stomach is accelerated during the procedure. In addition to diabetes, it also eliminates high blood pressure, obesity, and cholesterol diseases. These are usually co-morbidities with Type 2 diabetes.

The Procedure

Ileal interposition surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the laparoscopy method. It is also possible to use the open surgery technique in patients when laparoscopy cannot be applied. In the first stage of the operation, the sleeve gastrectomy procedure is applied. In the second stage of ileal interposition surgery, the small intestine is operated on.

Ileal interposition surgery is a complex operation. Surgery involves intervention in vital organs. In this surgery, which should be performed by metabolic surgeons who are experts in their fields, patients need to be careful when choosing a surgeon and hospital. When performed by a specialist and experienced surgeon, ileal interposition surgeries are performed without any problems.

Ileal interposition carries the general risks in every surgical operation. One of the worst scenarios may be the risk of lung infection. Although this is a rare complication, it is a dangerous risk. Except this, Absorption problems in the first year after surgery are among the risks that may occur. Although recurrence of diabetes after surgery is unlikely, it is still possible.

Considering the pros and cons of the operation, it is still quite useful and effective.

After the Procedure

Patients are discharged one day after surgery. A week of bed rest is recommended for patients discharged from the hospital. It is not easy to return to work and social life after such a major surgery. Candidates of ileal position surgery should know that they should take two weeks off from work if they are working.

A healthy diet program is planned for each patient during the first six weeks after ileal interposition surgery. Adhering to this diet is vital for patients to lose weight. With the weight loss process, diabetes regresses, and the surgery is successful.
